About 365 days of marriage

I started this blog in April of 2011. At the time, Bret and I were wedding photographers and it was a way to share how marriage is more about the day to day and so much more than the wedding day itself. For about 5 years, I blogged about the joys and sorrows of the Christian walk, marriage, work, family and friends. I’ve blogged every day since a few weeks after I started. In May of 2015, we photographed our last wedding. Now, I have become passionate about simplicity, particularly in marriage, Christianity, business, travel and life. For a number of reasons, we have become minimalists. I’ve found that having simplicity makes life so much deeper, refreshing and joyful. I hope that this blog will help others see the benefits of living simply.

Day 2846 – Sometimes You Have To Go Through The Storm For The Most Beautiful Places

On my flight from Baltimore to Tampa, we hit some really bad turbulence. The drink orders had just been taken, and the turbulence started. Even the flight attendants had to sit down. We did get drinks eventually, but I would say the turbulence lasted 80% of the 2 hour 20 minutes, flight. Even the landing was a little rough.

I spent most of the flight reading an amazing book (check back tomorrow to hear what it is and how it is changing my life). As we were making our final decent, I realized what I could learn from such a crazy flight. I knew that I was going to an amazingly beautiful place. Having explored a few of the beaches, and having spent time outside on the back patio of friend’s place, I understand why so many folks move here. Even though I didn’t know how great it was before my feet hit the ground, I had an idea of how good it would be. It wasn’t easy getting here. But isn’t that true of the journey to the great places in our lives? Your broken heart leads to your deepest love. Your failed business prepares you for an even better business. Your rough plane right leads to one of the most beautiful places you’ve ever seen.

If you’re stuck on a plane ride that is making you want to throw up, remember that the destination could be more amazing than you’ve dreamed.

Day 2844 – Taking My Own Advice – Traveling To Florida

I spend a lot of time talking about travel here. I encourage others to travel. I’m writing a book on how you can take a cross country road trip on any budget (see below for the link – Jennilyn from the future). If you say ANYTHING about travel, I will encourage you to go, even if it takes a few years to save up or if you take a smaller trip.

Today, I am taking my own advice. A great friend of mine is currently living in Florida. I decided to cash in some miles and go see her for a few days. I will put together a post after the trip to let you know how much I spent. But here’s my current total.

Round trip plane ticket from Baltimore to Tampa – $11.20.
Snacks purchased before trip – ~ $10-15.
Coffee at airport, thanks to my Dunkin app – $1.49
Accommodations – $0.00.
Running total – $27.69

I am still in shock that I haven’t taken a trip yet, just for fun. I can’t wait to visit my friend and explore Florida. I’m so thankful for work that allows me to work anywhere, and is flexible.

So friends, what trips are you putting off? What advice are you giving to other people but not taking yourself?

Day 2843 – A Long Overdue Date

It has been a crazy couple of months. Between moving, Bret building his real estate investing business, Bret working full time on top of that, me working for my clients, and just life in general, it has been so busy for us. We’re not fans of being this busy, but we’re big fans of the mindset of doing things others can’t imagine, so we can live a life people can only dream of. Oh how this has been looping in my brain. Since it’s been so crazy, Bret and I haven’t spent as much time together as we’d like. We even commented that we’ve been more like roommates. After a day of working on a number of things, Bret and I found some time to head into downtown Ellicott City for the spring fest. We were SHOCKED at how many people were there despite the rain. Shocked. If you’ve been to downtown Ellicott City, there were cars lining the road before you even got to the bridge. It’s amazing to see how strong the community is. I love that we live so close.

We ran into Pam Long of Pam Long Photography. She has been amazing at sharing live videos of all things Ellicott City since the flood. On days I can’t make it to openings of stores, I watch her live streams. Thank you for all you do Pam! She even took a pretty amazing picture of Bret and I! On her phone no less! You know someone is a great photographer when they can get photos like this from their phone.

We grabbed some spent grain pretzels with crab fondue and corn salsa from a new place in town, Manor Hill Tavern. They gave me a coupon for a free beer (you’re welcome Bret!) and I can’t wait to try more of their food!

The moral of the story is to date your spouse so they don’t become a roommate only!
